Buying Cheap Airfare at the Last Minute

Buying a last minute airline ticket can be actually quite tricky.  Many charter airline carriers will primarily sell packages.  The flight-only option will then end up costing more than a simple package.

Don’t worry though! There are plenty of ways to pick up an airline flight deal. Keep in mind that if you are going for a do it yourself getaway on your holiday break, it will be wise to book the flight first; the airline flight is likely to be the largest expense and there is generally less of a selection of carriers, which means less room for negotiation and higher prices.  Usually without exception, you can find a cheap hotel easier than finding a cheap airline flight.

Search all the websites of the flight carriers that travel to the location where you wish to visit. Make sure to join their mailing list. You may end up with more endless junk mail, but you will also get to hear about all of the deals that they are currently offering.

For quicker searches, you can save quite a bit of time searching for cheap flight options by visiting some of the flight consolidation services; such as Expedia, Travelocity, and Orbitz.

As a general rule, you can find the best deals for flights leaving Monday to Thursday.  On domestic flights, you can find many bargains on a Saturday. Travelers will almost invariably pay more for a Friday or Sunday flight.  Most holiday operators will offer the best deals for those that purchase airline tickets a set time in advance, normally it’s at least 14 days. If it is possible to work it into the schedule to also stay a Saturday night, this will also usually result in a lower fare.

When searching for flights, if possible, entertain the possibility of a flight that involves a connection.  Airline carriers will often place a huge premium on non-stop flights; and if this is not vital for you, you are likely to be able to save more money on a flight with at least one connection.

A further premium is normally placed on convenient flight times, i.e. ones that will not involve a particularly early start or involve traveling over night.  If you are prepared to compromise slightly on your flight times, you may find that you can make huge savings by taking flights that others wouldn’t normally want to take.

Try to look at other destination possibilities at nearby airports. It may be possible to fly into a nearby airport and drive the last hour or so, which may offer you a better price overall.

When you are considering buying your flight tickets, it is always worth going to a consolidator service, such as Expedia, Travelocity, or Orbitz. These will give you some excellent background information, such as the operators that offer the destination you are after and the typical prices you might be paying.

By doing your homework when searching for an airline ticket, you will be able to act more quickly when you see a bargain on tickets in the future. Very good deals on airline tickets often only appear for a very short time, so it is important that you learn to recognize a good deal right away so that you can purchase it the one-off deals before they disappear.

Also, when you are searching for flights, try to also search with ‘flexible dates’ enabled. This will allow you to get a good idea for the price differences that are occurring during your ideal travel period.  You would be surprised at how different certain days can actually be.

A few other tips that would help you to find a flight bargain is to consider an air courier travel.  In order to become a courier, you will need to be very flexible and prepared to travel alone with very little luggage; but on the plus side you will get to travel to different places very cheaply.

Some countries even offer air passes to tourists, which allow discount airline tickets if you are planning on spending a lot of time traveling around a particular region; such as Australia, Europe, or even Africa.

If you book the airline ticket and then find that the prices went down, contact the airline and ask them for a refund.  Many of the large airlines will offer to pay back the difference if the prices go down.  Make sure to read the small print and ask for the refund if it applies.  Even if your chosen airline does not offer this sort of refund policy it is still worth asking.  With the increased competition, airlines will be trying very hard to keep their customers happy.
